How Much Of A Friend Is The Nigerian Police To Us

Last week, I came across a trending issue of the “Azuka Sars”. That revelation got me scared to my bone marrows. I would never wish for anyone at all to fall victim of such but then it sparked a question in my heart. Can we ever feel safe with the Police?

The Nigerian police has been a place people look up to for security and sometimes “crime justice”. Do we really think that the Police force has lived up to this expectation? Fair enough at some points I would say yes and at other times it brings pains to the heart.

Last week, I came across a trending issue of the “Azuka Sars”. That revelation got me scared to my bone marrows. I would never wish for anyone at all to fall victim of such but then it sparked a question in my heart. I also remember an incidence that took place in 2018, a friend of mine went visiting a colleague of hers and while they were working, as they were video editors they heard a forceful knock on the door.

Wondering who the aggressive person might be, her friend opened the door only for him to receive heavy blows from the police man who banged the door. About three others entered and began searching the room for “exhibits”.
The demands of the of the victims to know what was going on fell on deaf ears as the police officers kept saying “where is the gun?”, “they are criminals”, and other incriminating words.

My friend being the daughter of a retired navy officer had to shout at them, threatening to call ‘Navy boys’ to storm the place before they could explained what was happening. The police men had received information that the “yahoo boys” they’ve been on a lookout for many months ago have moved to that area of the community. So, instead of doing a proper research, they just stormed the peaceful residence of every one.

They still made an arrest of my friend and her colleagues on the ground that they have laptops in their possession and yahoo boys use laptops. I saw this as a shallow way of reasoning for a sensitive profession as the Nigerian Police.
Many innocent people have gone to jail because of this mishap. I’m not saying that this is the case in all situations but we cannot neglect the fact that many people have since lost faith in the Nigerian Police.

Do you really think the Police is our friend ?
